Life Science Startup Hotspot

Lower Saxony’s strength in the life sciences is based on excellent, internationally renowned research and a strong foundation of innovative and globally active players in the industry. This potential provides a fertile breeding ground for spin-offs and startups. The cooperation between state initiatives, Niedersachsen.next Startup and BioRegioN aims to realise this potential and establish Lower Saxony as a life science startup hotspot.

Biotechnology: Key technology for current and future challenges

The key technology of biotechnology provides unlimited innovation and economic potential for new and sustainable solutions in almost all sectors and areas of life. These range from medicine, agriculture and nutrition to consumer goods, new materials and approaches to energy supply and bio-based data storage.

Bio-based high-tech products and concepts are being created for numerous industries and areas of demand by linking biosciences and biotechnological processes with other natural and engineering sciences. This applies to the interaction between the two key technologies of biotechnology and information technology. The concept of personalised medicine, for example, was only made possible as a result due to the synergistic use of these two technologies. In-silico design and the subsequent production of optimised or even completely new microorganisms for biopharmaceutical production and the food industry have also only been made possible by the efficient, mutually reinforcing interaction between biotech and IT. The same applies to high-throughput processes in the field of omics technologies and drug and vaccine development.

Life Science Startup Board Lower Saxony

A Life Science Startup Board has been established, to strengthen and expand the life sciences startup ecosystem in Lower Saxony. The board is made up of scientists with an affinity for startups and those who have already founded companies. In addition to scientific excellence, these individuals also have the experience and mindset required to transfer research to the market. The Life Science Startup Board will focus on 1) identifying current hurdles for life science startups and developing and piloting specific solutions and 2) developing a concept for a regional prevention strategy (RAPID Lower Saxony: Fast-tracking pandemic prevention) to avert and mitigate future epidemics/pandemics.

IP for Virtual Shares

At the suggestion of the Life Science Startup Board, a working group of universities in Lower Saxony was founded to pilot the IP for Virtual Shares model. An explanatory video has been created by Niedersachsen.next Startup, BioRegioN, SPRIN-D, Norton Rose Fulbright and the TU Darmstadt to give a better insight into the model.

The goal is to pave the way for successful partnerships and raise awareness for the IP For Virtual Shares model. This model enables startups to provide virtual company shares to universities by transferring or exclusively licensing the intellectual property. It provides an efficient solution for overcoming the challenges of financing and licensing intellectual property.

The TU Darmstadt has already successfully implemented IP for Virtual Shares as a model and we are supporting other universities in making this innovative participation model accessible to startups.
